"God hates me, that's what it is."
"Hate him back. Works for me."
Here's where it all started. The first Lethal Weapon. This one actually plays out it's proceedings with a fair amount of seriousness in a series that got progressively goofier.
The movie begins with a coked up blonde taking a swan dive off her apartment balcony to a very flat death. Were are then introduced to our two heroes, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh (Mel Gibson and Danny Glover). These two are are night and day to one another. Riggs is a suicidal loner that lives in a trailer by the beach. Murtaugh is the family man that lives in the suburbs.
They are partnered up to investigate the death of the girl that leaped off the balcony, who is revealed to be Amanda Hunsacker, daughter of Murtaugh's old Vietnam buddy Michael Hunsacker. Riggs and Murtaugh quickly find out Amanda was using poisoned drugs, and that her apparent suicide is now a homicide.
Through the course of their investigation they discover a large Heroin ring led by General McAllister (Mitch Ryan) and Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey). Riggs and Murtaugh set out to prove that the two cases are connected, and in the process try to keep themselves alive.
Lethal Weapon isn't just a shoot 'em up action flick, but also has a lot of emotion, especially with the suicidal Riggs, who is mourning the loss of his wife. The relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh grows and it feels natural, not forced.
This film led to three sequels and countless other "buddy-cop" films, but this is the one that got it right.
