Something is very wrong at Boston Memorial Hospital. Genevieve Bujold (Swashbuckler, An Ambush Of Ghosts) plays Dr. Susan Wheeler, who begins to suspect foul play when her best friend, admitted for a minor procedure, slips into coma and dies. Her lover and colleague, Dr Mark Bellows, thinks that she is over-reacting to the death of her friend, and refuses to take her seriously.
Digging into the details of her friend’s untimely operating table death, Dr. Wheeler discovers that there have been a dozen other patients, all admitted for routine and relatively minor surgeries, all of whom have died under the very same circumstances. Searching for a commonality in the cases, the Doctor soon discovers another intriguing fact; while all of the surgeries have had different doctors and operating staff, all the deadly procedures have taken place in the same operating room. Room 8.
It is not long before the Doctor’s investigative efforts come to the attention of her superiors who tell her in no uncertain terms to stop prying. But the Doctor persists, and soon has a killer tracking her.
Admittedly dated, Coma is nonetheless a gripping thriller that draws you in and wont let you go. The acting is solid, although Bujold does seem to be forcing it a bit at times, and the story is well written even though the climax is a bit predictable. The supporting cast features Rip Torn (The Insider, Freddy Got Fingered), Richard Widmark (Against All Odds, Blackout), and a very young Tom Selleck (Open Season, Mr. Baseball). Coma does not have flashy special effects or high speed car chases, and it doesn’t suffer from the exclusion.
Not a great who-dunnit, but if you like suspenseful thrillers, Coma is just what the Doctor ordered!
