When this film was made, in 1985, I couldn't even read yet. I saw it for the first time exactly 15 years later, and I must say I really enjoyed it. I'm used to see the actors the way the look nowdays, but watching them when they were young is pretty cool. The Brat Pack is cool, most of the films with people from the Brat Pack were cool in their time, and some, like this, still are.
Five students didn't behave properly and were told to go to school on a saturday. They all go, and the teacher (Paul Gleason) tells them to write an essay about what they did to get there. Each of the five students already had personal problems and things to deal with.
Andrew (Emilio Estevez) was in the school's wrestling team and his dad wanted him to be the best. He felt a need to proove to his father that he could be like him when he was in high school. John Bender (Judd Nelson) was the kind of guy who doesn't give a sh*t about anything, he was some sort of a tough guy who always got in trouble for disrespecting the teachers. Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) was some sort of nerd who always got the maximun grade in all of his classes, and he doesn't know what to do if he ever gets a bad grade. Claire (Molly Ringwald) had problems with her parents, they were thinking of divorcing or something. And Allison's (Ally Sheedy) reason for being there is unique. She's a lonely person, those who spend their break time along without talking to anyone.
They were very different kinds of people, and they knew it. Andy and Claire were part of the somewhat 'cool' group, while Brian was a geek, so they wouldn't even say hello to him on a normal school day. But this day is becoming really long and boring, so each one starts talking about their own problems while the others listen, and they end up being friends. They do some crazy stuff at that empty school as they got to know each other.
This movie is excellent because of both it's script and acting. Every single member of the rather small cast was amazing. The story can be quite shocking for some people because you could actually idenfity with one of the characters, if you're still in high school. It's also quite realistic about how the different kind of teenagers treat each other. And that essay they had to write was amazing, it's one of my favourite parts when Michael describes them all as "an athlete, a criminal, a basket case, a brain and a princess". The song "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds is also amazing, I think it stared around the time this film came out. I'd recommend this anytime, it's even fun to watch several times.
