As I was reading some comments on this film I realized many people have liked it, but that was maybe because people who hated it hasn't bothered to write something about it, who knows. The film isn't bad, but part of it was hard to believe, and although I reckon it's a nice and easy to like film that will really touch sensitive viewers, I guess it wasn't entirely my type.
Jimmy (Matthew Broderick) is a pilot who's assigned to a training program for monkeys, where he has to teach monkeys how to fly planes, by using a simulator. Jimmy's monkey used to belong to Teri (Helen Hunt), and after he finds out some stuff about this air force project he contacts her and asks her about Virgil (the monkey); he was already interested in talking to Teri, mainly because Virgil actually knows sign language, but some events led him to finally call her. There's not much more to the plot that I'd like to say.
Giving too much away could have influence on your reaction to the film when you first see it, so I'll limit myself to that.
The film shows how once Jimmy became really attached to Virgil, it was very hard to let go. This could happen not only with monkeys, of course, but the film shows us how very similar they are to us humans, it actually says 98% of the genes are the same, so it wouldn't be the same as having to let go an object or a smaller animal. As I already mentioned, the film can be really touchy because of all the monkey stuff, they are very easy to like, it would probably be less touchy if it had humans instead of monkeys.
The acting was pretty fine, but the monkeys were the stars, they were perfect. Helen Hunt is credited in second place -in credits order-, which is truly funny since she appears on screen no more than 10 minutes. I don't think you get to see another female character after the first five minutes, it's Jimmy, the monkeys and the rest of the workes at the air force base.
This is the kind of movie that some people would hate, some people would be indifferent to it, and some would find to be very cute and nice, so I won't say if I recommend it or not, I just hope you now have an idea of what it is, and then decide weather you'd like to see it or not.
