"You want to talk to them? Well, they can't hear you because they're STILL SHOOTING AT YOU!"
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back in Bad Boys II, the sequel to the blockbuster action film that basically launched both their careers, along with the directing career of Michael Bay. All three are back for a second time around along with Action uber-Producer Jerry Bruckheimer for more explosive, corpse-ridden action. And boy, have I missed it. For a long time, I've been craving a new 'R'-rated bloody action shoot-'em-up and this one certainly fills the bill.
The main plot this time concerns drug-runners who are smuggling ecstasy into the U.S, apparently from Cuba. (We import Ecstasy? I thought that stuff was made locally...anyway...) The main bad guy, Johnny Tapia (Jordi Molla), doing his best 'Scarface' impersonation is the Cuban in charge of the smuggling. Getting close to him is undercover DEA agent Sydney Burnett (Gabrielle Union), who has also apparently been secretly seeing Mike Lowry (Will Smith) and is Marcus's sister.
There is plenty of action throughout the film, a couple of car chases, plenty of shoot-outs and through it all, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are shouting clever one-liners over the explosions and gun-fire. The movie grows more prepostorous and absurd as it goes on, but it's all part of the fun. Movies like this are a carnival ride meant to entertain you for two hours (more like over two, in this case) and you check your brain at the door.
There's some inventive camera work by Michael Bay, especially during the freeway chase (You know which I'm talking about...it's the one that's in all the trailers), which keeps things moving at such a break-neck momentum that once you leave the theatre, you'll glance at you watch and wonder, "Geez, was that movie really two and a half hours?"
I must also make note that it was a nice touch that the three main cops, Mike Lowry, Marcus Burnett, and Captain Howard were working their way through Anger Management, trying to restrain and channel their rage throughout the various confrontations. It's the little touches like this that make Bad Boys II better than most of the buddy-cop re-treads we've seen since Lethal Weapon.
