Catherine Boyd (Meg Ryan) has problems with her car in the middle of the road, so she goes to see some mechanics, and that is where she meets Ed Walters (Tim Robbins), a mechanic who semeed to like Catherine from the first time he saw her.
Catherine seemed to like Ed, but she was already engaged to James Moreland (Stephen Fry). Catherine is a very intelligent person, and she wants to marry James because he is also a very intelligent person, -they are both experts in their fields- and she thinks that way their sons will be very smart. Catherine seems to be decided to marry James, even though deep inside she knows she feels something for Ed.
However, Catherine's uncle, who happens to be Albert Einstein (Walter Matthau), likes Ed more than James; that's no surprise, because Ed is a nice guy while James is not a very nice and humble person, at least not as Ed.
Einstein and his friends, -other scientists or extremly smart people- decide to make Catherine fall for Ed, of course this isn't going to be easy. They all know Catherine is looking for a very smart man, and Ed is a mechanic. Einstein gives Ed some studies he did back when he was younger and tells him to say it's his. So Ed comes up with all of this to look like a smart guy, but nobody believes him, so they decide to make an IQ test for him. Einstein and his friends help him, and he gets a high score.
After that, Catherine starts liking him a bit more. But James later finds out about that the invention Ed had made, about "Cold fusion", was previously made by Einstein, many years ago. He tells everybody about this, and Ed is discovered. Catherine gets really angry, but still Ed wants to be with her, and so does Einstein.
There are pretty good performances by every single actor in this film. Tim Robbins never disappoints me with his bright performances; Meg Ryan was not so believable, or maybe that is what her character was supossed to be, but it looked to me a little bit over acted. Still, she was ok. Walter Matthau as Einstein was, as always, pretty funny and convincing. It's a good story, a bit of romance mixed with comedy, enjoyable I'd say. Try to watch it if you get the chance.
