Six people -the game characters- are invited to Mr. Boddy's mansion but they don't exactly know what they're there for. They all have things in common, such as a guilty past and they're all being blackmailed by Mr. Boddy. The butler (Tim Curry) is the man who has all the evidence related to this, but instead of he being killed it is Mr. Boddy who ends up dead. After this they know for sure a killer is among them, but they have to explore the huge mansion trying to find clues.
The atmosphere is filled with suspense all the time, mainly because the characters are trapped in a huge house with plenty of secret passages. You always keep wondering what's going to happen next, but it's nearly impossible to figure that out. There are about three other people who somehow end up on the house and they will die too, it's quite thrilling.
All the characters are (or act) scared and nobody trusts a soul inside that house, since anyone could be the killer. The film keeps you so interested on it you'll actually want the electricity to be cut off one more time so another murder is commited. None of the character is supossed to act funny but some of them are by nature, like Christopher Lloyd's Proffesor Plum. But the highlight of this film was Tim Curry's Wadsworth, Curry gave the best performance of his entire career, every single line he delivered was fast-spoken and was always explaining the events, he was terrific and very funny, specially while he re-enacted the murders, those were the best parts. This is a rather intelligent movie, I love this type of films, and if you like what you've read so far, just wait until you find out the film has not one, not two but three endings! I've never seen that before and I must say it worked perfectly, 3 different endings all brilliantly acted and completely plausible, no lousy twists leaving a bunch of questions unanswered, it's all clearly explained, it's fantastic. I'd recommend this movie anytime, it has a very well written story, great acting, it's incredibly thrilling.. it's a must see. Oh, I almost forgot, just for the record I'd like to mention that Elieen Brennan, who's in this film, is also in the 1976 film "Murder by Death", which is a little bit similar to this one.
