While I enjoy slow-paced romantic movies, The Piano just left me tired and annoyed at the film for not giving me anything worthwhile to take from it.
The Piano is about a mute woman who has been set up in an arranged marriage to a man in New Zealand. She speaks through her beloved piano, and through sign-language translated by her young daugther.
Holly Hunter, who does a reasonable job of portraying Ada, the mute lead, does not speak one word through the entire film (Easy script to remember hey?), but gives a mediocre performance none-the-less with her manurisms and facial expressions.
I won't go into the plot, and without trying to sound like a sexist, I felt that The Piano was simply a Harlequin Romance put to film. The acting was there, and Anna Pacquin's performance as the lead's daughter has been proclaimed one of the best child acting roles ever. However the storyline was just not there, and it was very difficult to sit for the over-2 hour film.
I was also disgruntled by the fact that the music, as since the piano is played often, was far too repetetive. You hear the same song more than half the time, and the other songs played are very similiar. There is no music to change the mood of the film except for about 3 seconds when Ade plays a big of rag to show her emotions at the time.
It's a shame, since the actual movie (acting, lighting, sound) is adequate, but the writing is horrible. I do not recommend watching The Piano.
