Hitchcock once said disparingly that "modern movies are nothing but talking people." David Mamet says in his book "On Directing Film" (real good book by the way) that movies are a visual medium and should be carried along by pictures rather than dialogue. I happen to agree, a movie that's told by people talking instead of what's on the screen is not really a movie. Unfortunatly that's how a lot of movies are nowadays. Robert Zemeckis' new film "Cast Away" is different, it's the way movies should be.
Tom Hanks plays a manager for FedEx. He goes around training people and explining how important time is and really motivating the FedEx delivery men. While taking a plane to someplace, I don't know where, there's a storm and the plane crashes in the middle of the ocean. It's about that time that the dialgue goes away and the movie is carried solely by it's visuals.
Tom Hankis gets stranded on a deserted island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Every emotion, every progression of the story is done with visuals, and amazing ones at that. Tom Hanks has a toothache at one point, however he doesn't need to tell people that he has a toothache, just a hand on his chin and a pained look on his face is enough. He does create a face on a volleyball for companionship and talks to it every now and again, yet the talking he does is how dialogue should be in a movie, only to help the character get what he wants. How can a volleyball give someone what they want, well the need for comapnionship is an important part of the story.
Tom Hanks ends up growing a really long beard and is left with nothing but rags to cover his genitals. He decides to escape the island and go home and the movie just gets better with it's amazing visuals. It's a great movie, more similar to the silent movies of the early days. Anybody who watches this movie will enjoy it immensly.
I only have one caveat about this movie and that is it claims "Music composed and conducted by Alan Silversti" yet there's not a lot of music in this movie. In fact, there's really none. There's music over the end credit's but that's about it. There may be some music at the begining, but I can't remember. The ending was too long and disapointing. Still the movie was amazing, one of the best of the year. All the best movies of the year always come out at the end in time for the Oscars, and really, of this holiday rush, Casst Away is the only Oscar contender of the bunch.
