Christopher McQuarrie is mostly known for writing the screenplay to "The Usual Suspects," a terrific movie! Afterwards he was sort of stuck in this crime movie thing. I read an interview with him shortly before "Way of the Gun" came into theaters and he said "After 'The Usual Suspects' everyone kept asking me to do another crime movie. So I decided to do one in such a way that no one would ask me to do a crime movie again." In my opinion, "Way of the Gun' is much much more than a crime movie. It touches upon several issues and elements that are too much for a crime movie.
"Way of the Gun" has a TERRIFIC cast in it. Ryan Phillipe, Benicio Del Toro, Juliette Lewis, Taye Diggs, and James Caan. The story revolves around Ryan Phillipe and Benicio Del Toro kidnapping a durrogate mother (Lewis) and holding her for a $15 million ransom. That's just the situation. The elements of the story deal with much much more than that. It's a GREAT movie in every sense.
At first, I thought this movie was going to be a comedy. the previews didn't tell me much at all and the synopsis sounded too odd to be a drama. The opening is funny! But shortly thereafter, the movie takes a dramatic turn and becomes a masterpiece of filmmaking. This movie is made the way all movies should be made... VISUALLY! A lot of movies nowadays use dialogue to tell a story, it's nothing but talking heads. VISUALS should be used to tell the story in a movie! What's the point of making a movie if you don't film anything besides people talking? This movie is terrific!
I give "Way of the Gun" an 8 because it kicked ass! The ending was a bit of a let down though, but very poignant. It's not at all like the surprise ending "The Usual Suspects" had, but equally as powerful. I'm really looking forward to whatever this upcoming genius has in store!
