O is an underrated high-class film of the teen genre. Offering a modern and new look at one of many Shakespeare masterpieces. A revamp of Othello and a very effective one. The central core of the story is left the same but the outer coating is changed to present times with present problems. Still though containing the nucleus of a brilliant story of lies, deceit and jealousy. Othello is an intelligent teen type film following the truths of a Shakespeare tragedy, a truly great remake.
Hugo(Hartnett) jealous of his father’s(Sheen) treatment to Odin(Phifer) on the basketball team which, Hugo’s dad coaches, plots a massive plan to earn his wanted father’s praise that has been stolen away from him by Odin. Using Odin’s girlfriend(Julia Stiles) and his many other connections he turns a simple problem into a chaotic mess that of course will end in tragedy.
Luck is relied too much on in this picture. Too many things fall together perfectly for it to seem realistic. Most of Hugo’s cold hearted attempts are too successful and fall together almost exactly the same as when they were designed. Luckily though the ending doest follow this and it shapes a suspenseful exciting somewhat unpredictable finale.
A plus this film carries that cannot be used with the original Shakespeare play is that the loss of dialogue opens us up to brillance of the story line. That Shakespeare was more than witty dialogue, he was a masterful story teller in all aspects. Also this movie doesn't fall into the trap of monotonous issues of racisim and interracial dating. Avoiding that and just giving you the wonderful but tragic story.
Josh Harnett brings out sides to his character much better then he did in his later(O was set to relase in 98' but postponed due to Columbine) picture Pearl Harbor. Presenting us with a teen without options maniuplating and proceding with the extremes of what needs to be done to achieve what he wants. Phifer also brings out sides of his charcter well. His soft sensitve side and his raging anger ego fueled side. Julia Stiles steals the show though with her talent as Desi. A probable enjoyer of Shakespeare since doing three films all based on his plays somehow. She shows her appreciation through her magnificent performance.
O is top ten quaility of Shakespearean films. A modernization but a grasp of the story underneath and a wise retelling that entertains us instead of grossing us out much like teen related movies do today. O being based on Shakespeare maybe was a reason from keeping it becoming a mindless teenage flick but it was not just the same story but a completely new one built on the inner structure already erected by Shakespeare. O should become a role model and influence for future movies of the teen category. O is what teen films should be.
