This 1980 comedy is situated in a city office. The basic plot to the story is that housewife Judy Bernly, played by Jane Fonda, for financial reasons gets a job as a secretary. At the beginning she is weak and timid. However, in typical Hollywood style she has learnt confidence by the end. Judy is placed into a male controlled environment with poor promotion prospects. Staff already enduring this include Violet Newstead, played by Lily Tomlin. She has hated her boss for years, but is pushed over the edge when he, Franklin Hart Jr., Dabney Coleman, admits she wasn't promoted because she is a woman.
Another downtrodden woman being treated unfairly is Doralee Rhodes, played by Dolly Parton. Franklin has been spreading rumours about his relationship with Doralee, which makes everyone else hate her. Together these feisty women team up to teach Frank a lesson. During their destruction of masculinity they do many hilarious things to him. However, you will have to watch to see what they did.
All lead actors do a great job in their roles. Dolly Parton was even nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Doralee. However, it is Lily Tomlin's comic timing and great speeches that really give the film its edge. Jane Fonda's acting can be slightly woolly at times. However, whatever their capabilities they certainly take their characters seriously and certainly do a good job of taking their boss down a peg or two.
Colin Higgins, as director and writer of screenplay, certainly does a good job of creating the relationship and unity between the main characters. Perhaps the most famous thing about the film today is the song, of the same name as the film, by Miss Parton. This features on the opening and closing credits and is an up tempo country track to get you in the mood to laugh along with these women who are on the verge of liberation.
I recommend that you watch "Nine to Five". Remember though, it is more or less "The First Wives Club" of the '80's so if you didn't like that film then you may want to think twice before watching. Otherwise, go for it.
