Panama. 1999. The future of the canal is uncertain as the Americans relinquish its control to the Panamanian government. There are lots of national and international interests on who gets to actually control it, and this precarious situation sets the mood for “The Tailor of Panama”.
Andy Osnard (played by Pierce Brosnan) is an English spy who is reprimanded for misbehaving in a previous mission, and consequently sent to Panama. Desperate to regain his reputation, Andy will try to uncover a political scandal during these uncertain times. To do this, he needs someone who has connections, so he sets his attention on Harry (Geoffrey Rush), an English tailor who has made a name for himself in the high echelons of Panamanian society, serving the clothing needs of the president, drug lords, bank officials and such. What Andy knows is that Harry has debt problems and this he uses to coerce Harry into giving him information about the fate of the canal. Little does Andy know that Harry “tailors” more than just clothes.
I really admired the film for its mood and atmosphere, with suspicion and deceit permeating the air. Rush is excellent as Harry, and it was quite fun watching him as he played this small time opportunist getting involved in the affairs of powerful men. Brosnan was also great as he played an English spy, who is quite different from his more famous previous role. I also thought that the premise was original, which makes “Tailor” not your typical spy flick.
However, despite “The Tailor of Panama” having all the right things going for it, I couldn’t help but be bored with it. The film seemed terribly uneven as it unsuccessfully tried to balance suspense and farce. The story dragged in many parts, and the film just couldn’t quite get the momentum it needed.
I say skip “The Tailor of Panama”. You’ll be better off going to Armani.
