Matthew McConaughey (EDTV, Amistad, Contact) gives a superb performance as Naval Executive Officer Lieutenant Andrew Tyler who is in command of a submarine crew charged with recovering a German encryption mechanism known as “The Enigma Machine”.
The film begins with a very realistic and tense scene depicting a battle between a German U-boat and a British Destroyer that sets the mood for the rest of the movie. The U-boat escapes total destruction, but becomes disabled, and left with only partial power. Aboard this submarine is an “Enigma Machine”… a device that allows the German Naval Command to communicate with its U-boats in the North Atlantic, where they have already destroyed more than one thousand allied ships, and totally disrupted the allied supply lines.
McConaughey plays the executive Officer of the S-33, the American submarine that is dispatched to recover the Enigma device and destroy the U-boat, while posing as a German re-supply Sub. The plot thickens when the German Navy dispatches a real supply ship, and the race is on to see who will reach the crippled vessel first.
Based on true events that occurred in 1942, the movie is beautifully filmed with a keen eye to detail (both historic and cinematic), and McConaughey gets great support from the cast that includes Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and David Keith.
If you are a history buff, I recommend the DVD. It has lots of special features including documentaries about the actual mission. It’s a great film… I give it eight out of ten periscopes! DTS
