Blade Runner is regarded by many as the best science fiction movie ever. It has been called a masterpiece. It has been called a flop. But however you feel about Ridley Scott's classic, you can be pretty sure it'll have a big impact on you.
In 2019, technology has advanced to the stage where lifelike androids or "replicants" can be produced. Six of the latest batch, called Nexus-6, have escaped an off-world base and returned to Earth. Thus Deckard (Ford), an ex-Blade Runner (the team responsible for "retiring" rogue replicants), is forced out of retirement and despatched to find and kill the androids.
I saw it for the first time mid-2000, and personally, I was disappointed. Perhaps all the "Best sci-fi ever" stuff ruined it a bit, as by the time I saw it the film was regarded as a classic. Perhaps I didn't quite understand it. Whatever the reason, I didn't find it the brilliant film I was led to believe it was.
I'm not saying Blade Runner is bad film, I did actually quite enjoy it. And it does have plenty of good points. It is a very intelligent film, for example the subtle hints that Deckard is a replicant, which I only picked up on a second viewing. The script and characters are fairly good, although I should point out that what I feel is the best piece of dialogue actually came from Hauer. The effects, although dated now, were excellent at the time; and the score isn't far short of genius.
Verdict: I enjoyed Blade Runner, but after repeated viewings I just can't see that this is classic film material. Having said that I would highly recommend it, as it still is a very good film.
