Not too many movies based on Stephen King novels are very good. His dramatic works like The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption have been very good, but of his horror none of them are too decent. "Carrie," based upon his first novel is an exception though. This movie is actually quite quite good. Directed by Brian DePalma when he was actually a good director, and starring Sissy Spacek and a young John Travolta, this movie is weel worth watching, even if it's not too faithful to it's source material.
Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) has telekenetic powers, the ability to move objects with the power of her mind. She is tormented by her classmates because of her religously zealous mother, shy personality, and the fact that she's the fifthe wheel, she's just not cool. When a girl gets in trouble for tormenting Carrie, she gets her boyfirend (John Travolta) to help her exact revenge, only it doesn't turn out has planned.
The cinematography in this movie is fabulous, unbeatable camera work. Brian DePalma has always been a great filmmaker, although his recent work has been garbage, like "Mission to Mars," for instance. His older work like this is amazing. The characters are amazingly portrayed, and the visuals are great. DePalma even makes terrific use of a split screen, something rarely seen in movies.
This movie has spawned a sequal that's hidously awful. ut then again, so did "Pet Semtary," and "Children of the Corn", (7 sequals to that one last I checked! And that's all based on a ten page story!) This is one of the only King horror movies that's worth anything.
