Sadly, Hollywood lurks in India also. This film at points is a fair comparison to a Mighty Ducks movie. A hopeless band following under a confident leader trying to overcome impossible odds. Although it's back up air tank, its savoir is the musical score and superb acting from the Aamir Khan and Paul Blackthorne. But Certain songs will have you thanking modern technology for a scan forward or fast forward button. The poor dubbing is ugly to watch and defaces the well-done film. Subtract those and the score without the singing is beautiful and award worthy. A decent film falling flat on its face in the predictable ending but still surprisingly worth the 4 hours.
Lagaan is the story of a British controlled Indian town's fight for a break. A break in the harsh taxing of greedy Brits. The village must each year pay a lagaan (land tax) and this year they are being forced into paying double. But they cannot pay what they don't have since a famine has dried out all resources. The villagers complain and try to have it withdrawn but all the evil Captain will give them is a seemingly hopeless chance. He invites them to a game of cricket, which the villagers have never heard of and the conditions are if villagers win no lagaan for three years but if Britain wins they must pay triple rather than double. The villagers now must practice and fight to overcome astronomical odds. There only hope being the charismatic Bhuvan who leads them.
As I have mentioned the Hollywood style of the plot with its unoriginality and the poor annoying dubbing are the films hindering flaws. But granting a surprise the film amidst its predictability is fun and entertaining. Due to the amazing performances and the new setting and views into an opposite culture.
An Indian film that besides the Hindi language could be confused with any other American film. It's very much like the fluff made here in the States. Do not pass this by for the reasons of country that made it for that is hardly noticeable. Watch this and enjoy another people's culture and traditions. Also don't expect anything new it's much just a copy of American style. A film recommended for its entertainment not its artistic values.
