The moniker of 'National Lampoon' has not exactly screamed out the phrase 'quality comedy' as of late, but Van Wilder is a step in the right direction.
Make no mistake, this movie in it's heart aspires to be the 'Animal House' of the 21st century. It doesn't quite make it, but gets close. Ryan Renyolds plays Van Wilder, who is finishing up with his seventh year of college, and looks to have no plans of graduating any time soon. He loves college, and for the most part, it looks like the college loves him too. Ryan plays Van with a cool charisma that will bring comparisons to the great Ferris Bueller.
He is joined by Tara Reid, as a reporter for the school newspaper who is investigating the larger than life Van. She's also there to eventually fall in love with him.
The movie is also sprikled with familiar faces from the campus comedies of yesteryear, especially Tim Matheson as Van's father. Matheson's appearence in the film reminds the viewers of the earlier 'Animal House' and also reminds us how classier that film was.
Not to say that Van Wilder is devoid of laughs. Quite the opposite, actually. It is very funny, but there are some gags that are just too gross out for their own good. If these movies keep pushing the envelope further and further, I shudder to think how bad it could get.
Still, Ryan Renyolds is the highlight of the film, giving it just the right level of silliness. Viewers about the same age as the characters will probably enjoy this film as much as I do. This just isn't one to watch with the parents.
