Say it aint so, American Pie's Chris Klein and Heather Graham together in a movie! This has to be great, right? Wrong. Say It Isn't So is nothing better than sorry. Roger Ebert didn't laugh once in this supposed comedy, and neither did I.
Mr. Personality, Chris Klein plays Gilbert Noble, the neighborhood dog catcher who meets and falls in love with Josephine Wingfield (Heather Graham). They soon get into a relationship and become a serious couple. One day while laying in bed, Gilbert gets a call from a man who is helping him find who is real mother is and has finally found her. Her name is Valdine Wingfield, (Salley Field) but that would make Josephine his sister. Faced with the fact that he has done his sister, Gilbert walks away in shame and the story ends...at least it should have. That would have made the movie awesome, but no, it's just beginning.
While driving along the road, Gilbert accidentally hits a man named Dig. (Orlando Jones) Dig becomes Gilbert's new friend and together they travel into town discussing Gilly's problem. Unconvinced that he is related to Joshephine, Gilbert goes out to investigate in order to prove that they aren't related.
While exiled from the town, Gilbert finds out Josephine is about to be married to the town's rich man who of course is no clean man, then again whenever is the town's best looking, fattest wallet, most charming man ever really a good guy. So now Gilbert has so stop the wedding.
Say It Isn't So was one of the worst movies of 2001, and you won't have trouble understanding why. Good actors don't make up for the lack of comedy and story quality. Director James B. Rogers also did work on American Pie II, but this is his first movie as the director, and could quite possibly be his last. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with so many talented and well known actors that was as horrible as this. Come on, we're talking Sally Field here.
Say It Isn't So should be renamed, "Say You're Not Buying This Are You?" Don't rent this, and don't borrow it from your friend, it's not worth wasting the hour and thirty five minutes of your life.
