There's a perfect role for each actor I believe, in some cases the actor is so good he looks good doing anything, in other cases when he's never good then he should consider changing proffesion, but some are just average and there's certain character that they could play better than anyone else. This is the case of Sharon Stone with her character in this film.
After a former rock star is found murdered in his own bed the police starts investigating a writer, Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), who had been seeing the guy for some time now. Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas), who has a bad past which includes drugs and alcohol but is now clean, is asigned to the case. After it's discovered that the murder was actually based on one of Catherin's novels they introduce Dr. Elizabeth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn) to the case, a psychologist.
When they interrogate Catherine and ask her about the scene in their book, she says someone could have done it to involve her and nobody would think it was him, and the police said she could have done it thinking about that aleady, using the excuse "I'm not dumb enough to murder someone just like I did in my book". After the interrogation they find nothing on Catherine, and so far they have nothing. By this time Curran is having a hot relationship with Catherine, he knows it's dangerous but it seems to be irresistable for him. [For anyone I guess, if it's Sharon Stone we're talking about..]
The good thing about this film is that it never loses the suspense, that's why it's probably the best erotic thriller I've ever seen. There are many interrogants that come up while you watch it, some of them are unanswered and that's why I've always wanted a sequel. Douglas performance is great, as in most of her films, but it's Stone who does the outstanding job in this movie. Her character looks so sexy, evil, dangerous and so real it's almost hard to believe, great acting performance -and looks-, too bad she could never made another performance like that.
"The leg crossing scene". Of course more people than usual liked this film because it's not only a good thriller, it also has some of the most erotic and sexy scenes I've ever seen. There is a particular scene in which Catherine is being interrogated, where she crosses her legs in a way that you can actually see her crotch. For millions of people -including me- that was a memorable, unforgettable scene; it shocked everyone, I think just those few seconds made everyone like the film already. The fact that Sharon plays a smart character is also very cool, she's not only sexy as hell but smart too, she uses her intelligence to psychologically play with others, as she does in the interrogation scene. [She used her intelligence? Or some part of her body? :) ] It's a pretty good film nobody should miss, good directing that didn't fall to the side of the sex scenes only, the story never loses it's suspense and doesn't get interruped or changed by anything, good job Mr. Verhoeven. I'd recommend this one if you haven't seen it, specially if you're male.
A personal comment: There will never be a sexier woman than Sharon Stone in those times around 1990-1992 when she was at her prime, I think this kind of beauty is only found once every century or so, it'd be an insult to her to even compare another women. That's my opinion anyways.
