“Is that your car? Geez…what a waste of machinery!”
There’s a charm to American Graffiti that is hard to pin down. It might be the music, or the story, or just the charm of the actors. Or it could be the sense of timelessness to the film. The fact that anyone can relate to the people in this film.
This movie was dreamed up by George Lucas, who wanted to capture the experience of “cruising” because he felt like this ritual act of meeting others was being lost. The film is also at least, semi-autobiographical. The character of Curt is the one that most closely resembles George himself (I mean, com’n, Curt is wearing flannel, for crying out loud!)
The story circulates around a group of high school age students on the night of the last day of school, and their various wild and crazy adventures in 1962.)
American Graffiti is filled with great music (Well, in my opinion. You might not agree. It’s all late 50’s- early 60’s music) and even greater laughs. George Lucas shot the movie with almost a documentary feel. There is no real score to the film, just wall to wall songs, which were very well picked, and nicely compliment the action.
George Lucas definitely made a wonderful movie here, before moving on to make that little-known movie called “Star Wars.”
