The Beyond is one of those movies that doesn't make sense at all, has terrible dialogue, cheesy acting, yet is so goofy that it it becomes entertaining. That's not to say that it is 'so bad it's good'. The Beyond, directed by mad Italian horror filmmaker Lucio Fulci (Zombie, City of the Living Dead), is also very atmospheric and is quite stylishly photographed. But the main thing that makes The Beyond notable, is the GORE. The gore in this film comes in buckets, from dogs ripping out throats, zombies heads being blown off, a man being whipped by a giant chain before being covered in acid, nails being stuck through head and coming out through the eye, and even a group of tarantulas that devour a man's face.
The Beyond is the 'story' of a woman (Catriona MacColl) who becomes the heir to a Louisiana hotel, only to find that it is built on one of the seven gateways to hell, and this gateway will unleash a plague of zombies(!). She then runs to the hospital, to get a rational explanation from a a doctor, only for the both of them to end up fighting for their lives against the horrible plague of zombies(!!).
However, plot and character development serve no purpose in a Fulci flick. His characters' only duties are to die as horribly as it is physically possible, and in here, well, they do just that. And the dialogue, well, any actor who utters lines like "You may have a carte blanche, but you haven't got a blank check!" deserves a slow, painful death.
But despite all these flaws, The Beyond manages to be a very stylish and well directed flick. There is one great shot of a blind woman standing in the middle of a deserted highway that ranks with the best shots in horror history.
So, in conclusion, if you are a fan of these kinds of movies, I recommend you check this out. It's not a great film, but it's a lot of fun for those with the stomach for it.
