Porter has problems. A lot of people want to see him dead. It all started when his friend Val (Gregg Henry; Star Trek Insurrection, Layover) sets up a job ripping of a Japanese Crime Syndicate. Porter (Mel Gibson; Braveheart, The Patriot) comes up with a very unique, but successful method of robbery, and his wife Lynn (Deborah Unger; Rat Pack, Keys To Tulsa) shows up in the getaway car. That is where the trouble begins.
Val and Lynn double cross Porter, shooting him in the back and leaving him for dead. Five months later a very much alive Porter resurfaces and goes looking for revenge. When he confronts Val and demands his share of the money, Val tells him he used it to buy his way into “The Outfit” , another Crime Syndicate, headed by Carter (William Devane; Poor White Trash, Exception To The Rule) and Bronson (Kris Kristofferson; Joyriders, Limbo) who are less than willing to return the cash. Porter begins to take steps to convince them otherwise.
This movie is really good. Full of more plot twists and double crosses than a back-stabbers anonymous meeting. It is hard to describe it without revealing too many of the surprises hidden in the well written plot, but if you are a fan of the action movie genre, don’t miss this. Watch for the scene where porter is tortured. If you have any imagination at all you will be writhing in your seat from sympathy pains!
Gibson plays the part perfectly, aided by actors such as James Coburn, who looks remarkably well in this film considering his age. Payback will literally have you on the edge of your seat and until the final doublecross in the climax has you standing and cheering.
