"Okay Matt, what do you know that I don't?"
"Dad, it's only a 14 hour flight..."
-Matt McGuire and his Dad.
Well, Lizzie McGuire has finally jumped from the small screen to the big one, in a fun, silly little movie that could have been made strictly for the Disney Channel, if Lizzie wasn't so popular with kids right now. And she has every right to be. It was a fun, innocent show, and the movie is pretty much the same.
Lizzie (Hilary Duff) is going on a class trip to Rome, along with her best bud Gordo (Adam Lamberg) and select others, such as Kate (Ashlie Brillault) and her one-time crush, the lame-brained Ethan Craft (Clayton Snyder). Pretty much as soon as she lands in Rome, she meets an Italian hunk Pop star Paolo (Yani Gellman) and is mistaken for his singing partner Isabella (also played by Duff). He eventually asks her to pose as Isabella since the two broke up for an awards show he has to perform in. She hesitantly agrees.
During all this, Lizzie has to sneak away from the tour group and especially Miss Ungermeyer (Alex Borstein), which is easy enough. The fact that all the kids on the tour know what's really going on, but Miss Ungermeyer remains oblivious strains credibility, but since it's a kid movie tradition to make adults look like idiots, I'm willing to overlook that. What really bugs me though is the fact that while Lizzie is running around Rome, that leaves with very little for Gordo to do except distract Miss Ungermeyer everytime they almost run into Lizzie, which gets real repetitive. During these scenes, I recommend checking out the great Rome sights until the scene passes, because if you've seen one scene, you've seen them all.
Oh how I wish this movie wasn't so by-the-numbers. It's fun and silly enough, but we can tell pretty much where this is going. We know that eventually the real Isabella is going to show up, and that Lizzie is eventually going to have to perform in front of everyone at the awards shows. There are a few interesting surprises towards the end, though.
The one real saving grace of the film, and the character I liked the most, was Matt McGuire (Jake Thomas), Lizzie's scheming younger brother who has a collection of Lizzie's most embarrasing moments.
Overall, you'll see most of the plot twists coming way ahead, but there are a few surprises, and I'm sure big fans of the show and kids in the target audience will rate it a couple stars higher. Not a bad way to waste an afternoon, but it helps if you liked the show.
