People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden. Well, if the Fight Club poster in my dorm room isn't a dead giveaway, I guess I have to come out and say that I am a huge fan of Fight Club.
The movie begins with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) shoving a gun into Jack's (Edward Norton) mouth. Jack tries to explain to us what is going on. He decides to back up, and we meet Bob, the Big Moosey (Meat Loaf). Bob has bitch tits.
Jack decides he needs to go back further. He tells us that he has insomnia, he can't sleep at all. He begs his doctor for help, and the doctor tells him that if he wants to see real pain, he should go check out the testicular cancer support group, which is where he first meets the Big Moosey.
Jack soon becomes addicted to support groups. The more he goes to, the better he sleeps. Everything is going fine until the other big faker, the big tourist shows up. Marla Singer (Helena Bonaham Carter) is a lie that reflects his lie. Soon enough, Jack finds he can't sleep again. He has to lose this girl if he wants to get back to his peaceful sleep. He decides to break up the nights with her. She agrees and they're about to part ways for good when he asks for her phone number. Hmmm...
Jack departs on a business trip and meets Tyler Durden on his flight. Tyler makes and sells soap. He even has his own Soap company, the Paper Street Soap Company. Tyler gives him one of his cards and they part ways.
Jack returns home to find out his apartment has blown up and all his worldly possessions are now a nice flaming pile of shit on the ground. He first calls Marla, but can't face asking for her help. Instead, he calls Tyler and they meet for a couple of Beers.
Afterward, Tyler makes Jack admit he wants to room with Tyler. Jack admits it and Tyler says he can, but he has one condition...Jack has to hit him as hard as he can. This is the birth of Fight Club, where men exactly like Jack and Tyler can beat up each other until one of them ends the fight.
Now, I know this sounds like a movie where people are beating the snot out of each other for no reason, but I've figured that the whole idea behind Fight Club is for people who have never felt anything real their whole lives clamor for this opportunity to really feel something and prove they're really alive.
Of course, Tyler throws Fight Club up a notch and starts breeding himself an army out of the members. Jack realizes this too late and tries in vain to stop it.
Fight Club is an impressive film with a strong message about identity, great twists, excellent performances by the three leads (Pitt, Norton, and Carter), and a wicked sense of humor.
Side Note: If you plan to pick up the DVD of Fight Club, be sure to pick up the excellent Two disc special edition, which is still one of the crowning achievements in DVD.
