"Better to be a king for a night than a schmuck for a lifetime"
--Rupert Pupkin (Robert Deniro)
Martin Scorsese is more well known for amazing human dramas like "Raging Bull," "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," etc. It's not too often that someone recalls his comedies like "After Hours," or "The King of Comedy," the latter being one of the best dark comedies ever made.
Out of all the roles that Robert DeNiro has had in any film, this is my favorite. He plays Rupert Pupkin, and is obsessed with becoming the greatest comedian. He confronts his idol, talk show host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis in one of his BEST roles) and begs to be on his show. Unfortunatly Rupert is only given the runaround. He becomes more obsessed and stalks Jerry, finally kidnapping him in hopes of being on the show.
This is really an unforgetable movie full of wry dark comedy. A lot of people hate Jerry Lewis, but I love the guy. He's a comedic genius, and a great humanitarian... not just any actor wins a nobel peace prize you know! The cast in this movie is fantastic and the direction is right on the mark. This is my second favorite Scorsese film (Goodfellas being #1).
I give it a 9! It's a GREAT movie.
