Are you religious? Are you hot for Jesus in any way? If you are, then you need to see this movie. If you aren't at all into that kind of stuff, then you still need to see this movie. It is unbelievable. As for me, I am in no way into religion and Jesus Christ (I believe in the big G-O-D. that's it). The reason I rented this film is because Willem Dafoe is one of my favorite actors and director Martin Scorsese has made some kick ass films (such as Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, and Goodfellas). I thought I would just sit down and be like "WILLEM DAFOE... OHHHHHHHHHH YEAH." But hell no. I was captivated. No, I'm not all hot for Jesus now. I was just in amazement the whole time thinking to myself "wow, this is un-freaking-believable." This is a very serious movie and you need to make a commitment to sit down and watch it. But it is well worth the time.
Now, normally, I would give you some of the plot and whatnot. But if you can't figure out what this movie is about, then you need to be shot in the head, ok. I'll go in a different direction. Everyone knows what Jesus Christ did and what he is all about. I think it's safe to say that. And everyone has this conception that he is "perfect." At least, that is what I thought. I went to religion classes when I was younger and that is what I got from it. And that is how he is protrayed, perfect. What I love about this particular movie is that he is not displayed in that way. Jesus sins, or at least he confesses that he sinned. It shows that he is imperfect. The man basically goes insane because of all the events that take place. He realizes he is the so-called "Messiah," and when he cures a man from blindness, the pain hits him because he knows he is one step closer to becoming crucified. A couple good parts of the film are when cobras come out and start talking to Jesus and "purify" him. You would think that would be it with talking animals, but no. The cobras come back, along with a lion. No more animals, but a big ball a fire (that would be Satan) appears trying to convince Jesus that he is just a regular joe and there is nothing special about him whatsoever. It's good stuff.
The Last Temptation of Christ is a great portrayal of Jesus. Willem Dafoe is freaking incredible. He was the perfect man to fit the role. I must say though, he looks like a real man. He is not all ugly and freaky looking. You can tell he has that huge mouth and chin, but they are slyly hidden in the beard he is sporting. Harvy Keitel was just as incredible playing the role of Judas. Perfect role, perfect lines, and a perfect amount of him. But I must say, the girl angel for the last quarter of the movie stole the show. She was perfect. I think her name is Juliette Caton (I couldn't see the credits good enough to make it out). She was breathtaking (no, not hot, she looked like she was 14 when she made that film). I'm talking about her acting. I think I need to see some more of her movies. She was great. There was a bunch of other no-name actors in the film that need to start doing more. There was not one bad actor at all in the whole film. Everyone was perfect. I don't think you can say that about any other film out there.
The Lowdown
This is one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. I'm not a real fan of religion and whatnot, but I loved the portrayal of Jesus Christ in this particular film. Martin Scorsese did a golden job. Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, and that girl angel (not to mention of everyone else) were unbelievable. I will warn you though, this is an epic. It's 2 hours and 45 minutes long. But it is a smooth ride the whole way through. If you like religion, you'll want to see it (but I warn, you may be offended by it). Or even if you are like me and not into all that stuff, I think you will like it if you pay attention and see what is happening. Or, if you are a Willem Dafoe addict like I am, you DEFINITELY want to see this movie. This is by far the greatest film he has done. I don't think he will be topping this one. So, fuck going to see "The Fast and the Furious." Go to your local video store and pick up The Last Tempatation of Christ. I highly recommend it.
