It all starts when Helen (Kate Capshaw) finds a letter mixed in her mail, a love letter with no name or address, very poetic and romantic, it really touched her. Helen hasn't had a relationship in a very long while, or so it looks like, and this letter has made her feel desire for love again, so she starts a relationship with young Johnny (Tom Everett Scott), who's working at her book store. Johnny then finds the letter and thinks Helen wrote it to him, so he then quotes it and Helen think he wrote it to her; but the audience knows none of the above are accurate statements.
Helen's best friend, Janet (Ellen DeGeneres), who also works at the book store, finds the letter at one point and believes it's for her, but Helen tells her how she found the letter, eliminating that option. While Helen has her affair with Johnny, George (Tom Selleck), a fireman, is still very much in love with her; as a matter of fact, he has been in love with her for years, and still hasn't give up trying to get her. Also involved is Jennifer (Julianne Nicholson), a young girl who works at the book store, who apparently likes Johnny, but she doesn't imagine he's having sex with Helen, who could be his mother!
I thought this film was pretty well written and directed, I actually liked it. It's not entirely a love story, and that's a plus for me. The acting was pretty good, and I was happy to see a bunch of faces I've already seen before. Having some comedy in it was a good thing, otherwise it might have turned a little bit boring at some points. What made the film possible is the story, plain and simple, it's quite a good one, funny and entertaining, and finding out who really wrote the letter is quite a surprise.
If you're looking for action or suspense then this isn't for you. I wont say if I recommend it or not, mainly because I reckon this isn't a film for everyone, some might find it dumb and boring while others migth think it's beautiful, so I just hope you know what to expect now.
