So here at last is the long awaited sequel to the Oscar winning “The Silence of the Lambs”. Expectations are high for “Hannibal” since it continues one of the most esteemed dramas of the 90’s, but when Jodie Foster turns down the role, you know there is something wrong.
Anthony Hopkins is back as Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic manslayer who after ten years of hiding has moved to Florence, Italy. The FBI now has upgraded his status to the infamous 10 Most Wanted. Across the Atlantic, Agent Clarice Starling (now played by Julianne Moore) becomes involved in a highly scorned undercover mission, and her reputation is on the line. Just a decade earlier, Clarice was renowned for her capture of Buffalo Bill with the assistance of Hannibal, so the FBI decides to put her back on the case to find the elusive Hannibal. However, even the always remarkable performances of Hopkins and Moore cannot save “Hannibal” from being a disaster.
What made “The Silence of the Lambs” such a great movie was that it blended a good detective story with Clarice’s personal struggle. The tęte-ŕ-tęte’s between Hannibal and Clarice were so captivating, that the Buffalo Bill hunt almost becomes a side story. “Hannibal” on the other hand does nothing to this effect and the film is reduced to a mere cat and mouse chase. One would think that since “Silence” was about Clarice, that we would get to know more about Hannibal since the movie was named after him, but this is not so. The film is more concerned on how violent Hannibal can get, and we never really get into his mind. “Hannibal” is almost a display of numerous violent and bloody events, and some are done in bad taste.
I have to confess that I came in to “Hannibal” with lowered expectations. I have heard nothing but negative reviews on the film, and I knew that “The Silence of the Lambs” is a hard act to follow. However, I convinced myself that as long as it was entertaining, I would recommend it, but “Hannibal” is anything but that. The first act was too long, some of the violence was unnecessary, and even if one thinks of the film as a simple good versus bad guy movie, it does not even work then. “Hannibal” is an utter disappointment at any level.
