"I see you shiver with antici......pation."
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a movie that could have disappeared into oblivion upon release. Instead, it was resurrected to be shown in movie houses as a midnight movie. There it slowly grew with a cult audience and out of that grew the famous "Audience Participation" where the audience shouts things back at the characters and participates in various parts of the movie. I give the movie itself seven stars. Seeing it with an audience (Preferably a good audience that knows the callbacks) it bumps it up to a ten.
The movie begins with the opening song being sung by a giant pair of lips. This alone adds a distinction to the film as something far from the ordinary. From there, we meet our two heroes Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) at a friend's wedding. Soon Brad has proposed to Janet and they're off to announce their engagement to their good friend and former tutor, Dr. Scott (Jonathan Adams).
It's on their way to see Dr. Scott that they get a flat tire. Brad remembers that they passed a castle a ways back. They walk back to go see if they have a phone so they can call for help. There, they encounter Riff-Raff (Richard O'Brien) and Magenta (Patricia Quinn). They are invited in that's where the madness begins.
It's the appearance of Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) that really cranks up the madness. He plays the role with such over the top glee that it's impossible not to like him.
The songs of the film have an addictive quality to them and are definitely the highlight of the film. Notables are: "Science Fiction, Double Feature," "Dammit Janet," "Hot Patootie," "Sweet Transvestite," and of course, "The Time Warp."
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a strange, wild ride that not everyone will enjoy, and it’s certainly not for the easily offended. However, if you get the sense of humor, there’s much fun to be had here. It makes one wonder if it would still be popular as it is today if it hadn't been re-released all those years ago...
