Here's John Hughes with yet another film that failed to equal his most popular work, the 1985 film "The Breakfast Club". But I can't really it was painful to watch, at least I was able to marble at Jennifer Connelly, and even if the story was kinda dumb at least it keeps you from getting totally bored.
Jim Dodge (Frank Whaley) is a kid who enjoys living with his parents but these threaten to kick him out of the house if he doesn't get himself straight. Jim has been fired from several jobs abnd his father is even thinking of sending him to a relative in other city. He gets a new job a Target store, he's the guy who cleans the floors after the store closes. Not a very exiting job, specially since he has to be alone the whole night until the store opens again. It turns out that the afternoon before his first night at work, the daughter of a very wealthy man had fallen asleep in one of the dressing rooms, so she awakes in the middle of the night and starts talking with Jim.
Josie (Jennifer Connelly) was a gorgeous girl and probably every kid in town had a crush on her, including Jim. They start talking about how much both of their lives suck, Jim still lives with his folks and Josie tells him that's not the right thing to be doing; She, on the other hand, has everything she needs except a father that won't try to control her life. After some talking they decide to go to Florida with some money Josie has, but first they have to get through the night. But some problems start when 2 robbers, Nestor (Dermot Mulroney) and Gil (Kieran Mulroney) break into the store. Jim and Josie are trying to figure out how to get away from them and continue with their plans of going to Florida.
I wouldn't exactly say this film fits into the comedy genre because I never laughed while watching it, well, that might have been because I was too focused watching Jennifer Connelly and thinking about other things and not the film. You can't expect great performances by anyone in this movie, it was all average I'd say. Most of the film happens in the same night, not much to tell so it's actually a good thing that the film is so short. It's not that bad, though, you might think it's a good time to spend 80 minutes if you're incredibly boring, but if you ask me I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a big Jennifer Connelly fan, like me.
PS: I was going to rate the film with 5 stars, but considering the most beautiful actress in the world is in it, I added an extra point.
