"Don’t trust your partners, trust your pets."
Some of you might notice that both John Cleese and Michael Palin star in this British comedy. If you’re looking for Monty Python style comedy, you’ll be disappointed in this movie. No knights who say Nee, no giant feet coming out of nowhere. This is however a genuine British comedy. The jokes are shallow, the classical stereotypes are present and the plot is rather predictable.
Starring besides John Cleese and Michael Palin are Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, True lies) and Kevin Cline (Dave, French Kiss), both top class American actors.
They give the movie an extra twist and it works quite well.
Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis), George (played by Tom Georgeson) and Ken (Michael Palin) plan a diamante heist. Wanda brings in her brother Otto (Kevin Kline), who turns out to be her lover. The heist goes well but Otto and Wanda set up George and he goes to jail, but only after he moves the diamantes to a different location. An old lady is witness to the heist and can identify George so he asks Ken to get rid of the witness. Ken he accidentally kills her three dogs first; the lady then dies of a heart attack. When Otto and Wanda find out the diamantes are missing, Wanda tries to find out if where they are by seducing his lawyer Archie (John Cleese) but he doesn’t know where they are. Otto then turns to Ken, who keeps a fish called Wanda, and forces him to tell him where the diamantes are hidden.
Although the budget for this film is lower than any US projects, it’s still a pretty good movie, with strong actors. John Cleese, clumsy as ever, plays a naive man who gets the girl. Jamie Lee Curtis is great although this isn’t her best part (the Halloween series are superb). Kevin Kline plays an American macho stereotype with a history in crime and he does it quite well. His character is sometimes overzealous and that gets him into trouble. Finally, Michael Palin is a stuttering, naive animal lover with a crush on Wanda. He is heartbroken when he accidentally kills 3 dogs when he was supposed to kill an old lady who witnessed the crime. Excellent acting. The setting is London and you get to see quite a lot of the city.
